Let’s learn more about the new peanuts!
When are the new peanuts coming out?
Are new peanuts really that tasty?
Is there any way to find good new peanuts? And so on…
We explain all the questions our customers often have about the “new peanuts” at the beginning of fall every year, and how to get the best new peanuts!
The greatest characteristic of the new peanut is flavor
New peanuts are freshly harvested and have outstanding flavor.
Chiba peanuts have always had a wonderful taste and flavor, but the flavor of the new peanuts is exceptional. Compare them to last year’s peanuts and you will be amazed at the difference. You can only taste this flavor of the new peanuts during the season when they are harvested throughout the year.
When are peanuts in season, and available?
End of August to mid-September, Boiled peanuts
Around September, jambo peanuts Omasari boiled peanuts
Mid-October, Roasted peanuts of the Nakate Yutaka variety
Early November, Roasted peanuts of the Chiba Handachi variety.
(This may vary slightly depending on the weather and other factors.)
The peanut season is from August to November, and freshly harvested peanuts appear one after another during this season. However, the season of new peanuts differs depending on the product.
The reason boiled peanuts produce new beans so quickly is because there is no drying process. In the case of dried peanuts, they are dried for about a month, but in the case of boiled peanuts, the drying process is skipped and the peanuts are cooked immediately, so the new beans appear much earlier. It is like the relationship between green soybeans and soybeans.
Typically peanuts are harvested around October. First, the early harvested Nakatebutoyo shinto beans are harvested first, followed by the late harvested Chiba hantachi beans.
New beans don’t always = tasty! Why is it that the more fashion-conscious you are, the less tasty new beans you will find?
Around September, people are sobbing and inquiring about new peanuts.
But wait a minute!
In fact, between you and me, new beans that are harvested too early often do not taste good. Why is that? There are three reasons.
One is the place of origin.
The harvest time of peanuts in Chiba varies from region to region. Where they are harvested early, the taste is often a bit bland, perhaps due to the soil.
The second is the drying process.
After the beans are dug up, they must be allowed to dry slowly and naturally in the autumn winds for three to four weeks in the field. However, there are some stores that want to sell their peanuts earlier than others and get a head start on the new bean season, so they finish the drying process in about three days. If you skip the drying process and roast the peanuts by force, they will become hard. The softness unique to new beans is lost.
The third is the difference in varieties.
I have one question for you who want new beans.
Which variety of new beans would you like?”
Were you able to answer this question immediately? Many probably could not. Many customers come to our store looking for new beans, but only a few buy with the variety in mind.
In the case of roasted peanuts, there are three varieties: the early-ripening “Nakateyutaka” and “Q-Nut” peanuts, and the most delicious “Chiba Hantachi. The new peanut are first harvested from the “Nakateyutaka” and “Q-Nut” varieties, followed by the “Chiba Hantate” about 3 to 4 weeks later. In other words, almost 100% of the new peanuts in the early season are the Nakatebutaka or Q-Nut, not the Chiba Hantachi, which is said to be the most delicious.
How to get the best new peanuts
- To know where it comes from.
- To pay attention if it is too early.
- To acquire a proper knowledge of peanuts.
If you pay attention to the above three points, you will have a better chance of finding delicious new peanuts. However, it may be difficult to keep a watchful eye on the peanuts, since information is not available unless you are on the grower’s side.
So it is better to buy from a store/person you trust.
