And so on…

We explain all the questions our customers often have about “new-crop peanuts” (this season’s harvest) at the beginning of fall every year, and how to get the best new-crop peanuts!

The greatest characteristic of new-crop peanuts is flavor

New-crop peanuts are freshly harvested and have outstanding flavor.

Peanuts from Chiba, Japan have always had a wonderful taste and flavor, but the flavor of new-crop peanuts is exceptional. Compare them to last year’s peanuts and you will be amazed at the difference. You can only taste this flavor of new-crop peanuts during the season when they are harvested throughout the year.

When are peanuts in season, and available?

End of August to mid-September, Boiled peanuts

Around September, boiled peanuts of the jumbo Omasari variety

Mid-October, Roasted peanuts of the Nakateyutaka variety

Early November, Roasted peanuts of the Chiba Handachi variety.

(This may vary slightly depending on the weather and other factors.)

The peanut season is from August to November, and freshly harvested peanuts appear one after another during this season. However, the season of new-crop peanuts differs depending on the product.

The reason new-crop boiled peanuts come out so quickly is because there is no drying process. In the case of dried peanuts, they are dried for about a month, but in the case of boiled peanuts, the drying process is skipped and the peanuts are cooked immediately, so the new-crop peanuts appear much earlier. It is like the relationship between green soybeans and soybeans.

Typically peanuts are harvested around October. First, the early-maturing Nakateyutaka new-crop peanuts are harvested, followed by the late-maturing Chiba Handachi.

When to harvest peanuts grown at home

If you are growing peanuts in your own garden, harvest them about 75 to 95 days after the plants begin to flower. The timing depends on the variety: about 95 days for Chiba Handachi and about 80 days for Nakateyutaka. For the full process from sowing to harvest, see our peanut growing guide.

New-crop peanuts don’t always = tasty! Why is it that the more trend-conscious you are, the less likely you are to find tasty new-crop peanuts?

Around September, everyone gets restless, and inquiries about new-crop peanuts never stop.

But wait a minute!

In fact, between you and me, new-crop peanuts that come out too early often do not taste good. Why is that? There are three reasons.

One is the place of origin.

The harvest time of peanuts in Chiba varies from region to region. Where they are harvested early, the taste is often a bit bland, perhaps due to the soil.

The second is the drying process.

After the peanuts are dug up, they must be allowed to dry slowly and naturally in the autumn winds for three to four weeks in the field. However, there are some stores that want to sell their peanuts earlier than others and get a head start on the new-crop season, so they finish the drying process in about three days. If you skip the drying process and roast the peanuts by force, they will become hard. The softness unique to new-crop peanuts is lost.

The third is the difference in varieties.

I have one question for you who want new-crop peanuts.

“Which variety of new-crop peanuts would you like?”

Were you able to answer this question immediately? Many probably could not. Many customers come to our store looking for new-crop peanuts, but only a few buy with the variety in mind.

In the case of roasted peanuts, there are three varieties: the early-maturing “Nakateyutaka” and “Q-Nuts” peanuts, and the most delicious “Chiba Handachi.” New-crop peanuts are first harvested from the “Nakateyutaka” and “Q-Nuts” varieties, followed by the “Chiba Handachi” about 3 to 4 weeks later. In other words, almost 100% of the new-crop peanuts in the early season are Nakateyutaka or Q-Nuts, not the Chiba Handachi, which is said to be the most delicious.

How to get the best new-crop peanuts

To know where it comes from.

To pay attention if it is too early.

To acquire a proper knowledge of peanuts.

If you pay attention to the above three points, you will have a better chance of finding delicious new-crop peanuts. However, it may be difficult to keep a watchful eye on the peanuts, since information is not available unless you are on the grower’s side.

So it is better to buy from a store/person you trust.

If you choose SUZUICHI, a peanut specialty store, you can get the latest information about new-crop peanuts below.

● If today is September to January.

Newly harvested peanut products are already available.

Click here for new-crop peanut products

*Gift & assortment sets including the products shown on the above page will also be new-crop peanuts.

● If today is February to August.

Please sign up for our e-mail newsletter at the URL below.
